The Easterly exposure vineyard is densely planted with 4545 vines per hectare; ancient pre-Cambrian soil 550 million years old of eroded basalt over limestone rich sub soil that has a PH of close to neutral mixed with copper infused Greenstone rocks. It is also only one of the two vineyards in Heathcote planted East to West. The 2022 Demi by Syrahmi is a blend of three vineyards from the Heathcote region. Kennedy’s, Carl Brown, \u0026amp; Cavalry all make up the blend with a typical high percentage of whole bunch (+60%). Wild yeast fermentation and malolactic fermentation. Open fermenter, foot \u0026amp; hand plunging with minimal pump overs. All grapes were handpicked on the 21st of March 2021.\u003cbr\u003eSteady winter rains led to very healthy overall soil moisture, which resulted in some superb plant vigour and\u003cbr\u003egrowth. Spring was a little delayed, and the temperatures were on the cooler side, however that being said\u003cbr\u003ethings dried out quickly. For the most part fruit set was modest probably driven by some rather gusty weather,\u003cbr\u003eparticularly during flowering, which is a little unfortunate. However, the fruit was fantastic and the plants\u003cbr\u003esuper healthy, (particularly if you compare it to last year’s super dry beginning). A little cooler than most\u003cbr\u003evintages and hence in some instances harvest was a tad delayed, though the mini heat wave late in the season\u003cbr\u003edid wonders in helping the plants push ripeness resulting in some great looking fruit to work with. The season\u003cbr\u003ewas a little challenging from a disease pressure prospective but overall, the yield and quality were superb.\u003cbr\u003eFoot stomped before gently pressing into stainless steel. Cold settled for 60 hours then racked and transferred\u003cbr\u003eto new and old French oak for primary and secondary fermentation. Matured for 14 months in oak and a\u003cbr\u003efurther 3 months in stainless steel prior to bottling.
