The Eastern Peake Intrinsic Pinot Noir 2023 from Ballarat’s Coghills Creek enchants with aromas of red cherry, goji berry, and pomegranate, woven with cigar clippings, sweet maple leaf, and rich brown earth. The palate is firm yet balanced, with powdery tannins, lively acidity, and a savoury, forest-floor complexity, offering decades of potential. Crafted with minimal intervention—destemmed, wild yeast fermentation in 3000L concrete fermenters, daily pump-overs, basket-pressed into French barriques (30% new), and settled in stainless steel—it’s bottled unfined and unfiltered. The vineyard, at 430m altitude, uses organic and regenerative practices, with rotating cover crops to maintain volcanic grey loam soils over weathered basalt. Founded in 1983 by Norman Latta and Dianne Pym, Eastern Peake is now guided by their son Owen, whose low-impact approach crafts this multi-block Pinot, capturing the cool 2023 season’s essence.

The Eastern Peake Walsh Block Pinot Noir 2023, pulled from Frank and Kerry Walsh's storied site across the road in Coghills Creek, erupts with a feral rush of mulberry, wet fern and truffled earth, spiked by violet florals and a smoky undercurrent. It barrels into the mouth—dense yet fleet, red berries tumbling through a chewy, spice-dusted core, etched by taut acids and a grainy tannin grip that lingers like a cool wind off basalt ridges. The 2023 chill sharpened everything to a blade's edge, yielding fruit with real nerve.

Hand-picked April 13, all destemmed into open concrete tanks for indigenous yeast to take the wheel, daily pump-overs coaxing out the layers, then basket-pressed April 23 into barriques for a year's hush. Sulphur slipped in post-malo that November, racked clean to steel in March '24 for winter's quiet alchemy—no fining, no filtering, just a bare trace of SO2 before bottling. MV6 clone roots from '95 dig deep into that grey loam over weathered basalt, farmed raw and relentless by the Lattas now. A Pinot that prowls, not prances—pair it with game, let it roar.

The Eastern Peake Griffins Road Pinot Noir 2023, carved from Ballarat's soaring Griffins Hill at 440m, unleashes a wild rush of forest floor, damp undergrowth, and gamey meat, chased by herbal twists and a flash of ripe cherry. It charges the mouth with deep, generous curves—sweet red fruits plunging into a plush, woolly core, sliced by melting acids and wrapped in long, rounded tannins that hug without grip. This one's got heft and heart, all effortless grace in the cool 2023 snap.

Hand-harvested early April, destemmed into open concrete tanks for wild yeast action, daily pump-overs to tease out the juice, then basket-pressed post-ferment into barriques for 12 months' rest. Racked clean in March, a dash of sulphur post-malo, no fining, no filtering—straight to bottle in November, raw and unbowed.

The Griffins Road block, Pinot Noir planted 1995 on volcanic grey loam laced with basalt, now leased back under organic regime by the Lattas. A beast with soul, built for the table and the long haul.

Eastern Peake Griffins Road Chardonnay 2023, Ballarat’s high-altitude rocket fuel.

It explodes with white peach, finger lime and raw almond, then slams in a wave of crushed rock and sea-salt tension. The palate is coiled-spring tight: creamy yet razor-sharp, driven by ripping acidity and a chalky, saline finish that refuses to quit. Pure 2023 cool-climate adrenaline.

Whole bunches straight to press, wild ferment and full malo in 300 L Siruge and Stockinger hogsheads, zero racking, left on full lees, bottled straight from barrel, unfiltered, barely any SO2. The Griffins Road block (I10V5 clone, planted 1995 on volcanic grey loam) is farmed hard-organic by the Lattas.

One of the most electric, mouth-watering Chardonnays coming out of Victoria right now. Drink it loud.

From Ballarat’s high Coghills Creek, the Eastern Peake Coghills Creek Pinot Noir 2023 spills out scents of tart raspberry, rhubarb, and pink peppercorn, shot through with slivers of wet slate and dried lavender. The mouthfeel is alive, weaving juicy red fruit across a scaffold of fine, chalk-dust tannins and a zippy acid line, trailing off with a clean, briny sting that nails the cool 2023 season. Made with a soft hand—wild yeasts in 3000L concrete vats, basket-pressed, then 12 months in French barriques (20% new)—it’s bottled unfiltered, with just a whisper of SO2. The four-block site, grey loam atop basalt, leans on organic farming and cover crops for soil vigor. This Pinot hums with bright, unforced clarity.

What a fantastic value for money Chardonnay.

In 2021 a decision was made to produce an "Introductory level" Chardonnay from both our own & sourced fruit (from vineyards that go under the Latta range). This wine is again made up from 5 vineyards (Eastern Peake, Mount Coghill, Two Mile Hill, Pirrepoint & Moonambel).
All individual sites were whole bunched pressed, fermented naturally in 300L hogs heads & 228L (30% new) barriques, racked after 12 months élevage to tank, always full malo, no fining or filtering, bottled 4 months later from racking. A small amount of sulphur post malo & pre bottling.

Crafted with restraint—5% whole bunch, 70% whole berry, 30% crushed, wild yeast fermentation in wax-lined concrete, and aged in neutral French barriques—it’s bottled unfiltered with minimal SO2 to preserve purity. The Walsh Vineyard, planted in 2003 with PT23 clone on grey loam over basalt, employs organic farming with rotating cover crops to nurture soil vitality. Since 1983, Norman Latta and Dianne Pym’s Eastern Peake has been a Ballarat pioneer, now guided by their son Owen, whose deft touch crafts this refined Syrah, a testament to the region’s cool-climate finesse.
