The Avani Amrit Chardonnay 2024 from Mornington Peninsula’s Red Hill South entices with vibrant citrus, crisp green apple, and subtle cashew on the nose, followed by a palate of high acidity, briny minerality, and a refined, lingering finish, showcasing the pristine 2024 vintage. Crafted with minimal intervention—whole-bunch pressing, wild yeast fermentation in seasoned French oak, and no fining or filtration—this wine captures the Peninsula’s cool-climate elegance. The vineyard employs biodynamic viticulture, using seaweed sprays, cover crops like oats and peas, and garlic-chilli pest deterrents to nurture soil health. Since 2005, Shashi and Rohit Singh of Avani Wines have honed their craft, blending Indian agricultural heritage with Mornington’s maritime terroir. Their Amrit range, designed for immediate enjoyment, delivers a poised, textural Chardonnay that balances energy and sophistication, reflecting the meticulous care of this family-run estate.

Tete de Cuvee is a french term used to describe a winery's top release - the pride of the estate. To continue the french them, this is Adrian Rodda's paean to Bordeaux, a Cabernet Sauvignon blend that also features Merlot and a touch of Petit Verdot.

It's Australian Cabernet of high order, though firm and proud currently, and needing to cellar. Poised and dense, bathing in chocolate and blackcurrant flavours and held in check by ripe but potent tannins. The fruit source is the Smith's Vineyard, planted in 1978.

It's a first release, and a partner wine to the similarly excellent Triangle Block Chardonnay. Stash some in the cellar.

Dry, bitter and fragrant. The Cinq a Sept Extra Dry is specifically designed for those that love a very dry Martini but can be used a range of cocktails. The components are Lemon and Grapefruit peel, Cardamom, Fennel seed, black Pepper, Rosemary, Thyme, Lemon Thyme, Tarragon, Oregano and Angelica. The palate has imperceptible sweetness and is quite (some would say very) bitter. Its a mixer. We love our version of a Dry and Dry using the ED and some Bundaberg Ginger beer but use it in anything for an aromatic lift and a bitter twist.

A delicate nose of lemon blossom and white petals. There is great presence and texture on the palate without being overwhelming. The wine is really pure and zappy with tangerine-like acidity, lively and wirey. This wine shows the restrained wine-making that lets the fruit be front and centre which is a good thing because this is some seriously good fruit.

The wines of Merricks are amongst, if not the best, wines of the Mornington Peninsula. They have an arresting balance between vibrant aromatics, silky smooth palate and firm refreshing tannins. The palest of the three wines, the 2017 Merricks displays a bright crimson edge and lifted raspberry and cranberry notes. The palate has a silky feel with very fine tannins and refreshing acidity.
