The Eastern Peake Walsh Vineyard Syrah 2020, from Ballarat’s Coghills Creek, enchants with a vivid aroma of black cherry, sour cherry, blackcurrant, and anise, laced with flinty minerals and brambles. Its medium-bodied palate dances with featherlight tannins, bright acidity, and a spice-driven, lingering finish, capturing the cool 2020 vintage’s essence. Crafted with precision—5% whole bunch, 70% whole berry, 30% crushed, wild yeast fermentation in wax-lined concrete, and matured in neutral barriques—it’s bottled unfiltered with minimal SO2 for purity. The Walsh Vineyard, planted in 2003 with PT23 clone on grey loam over basalt, thrives under organic practices, with rotating cover crops nurturing soil vitality. Founded in 1983 by Norman Latta and Dianne Pym, Eastern Peake is now guided by their son Owen, whose minimalist touch shapes this graceful Syrah, a striking testament to Ballarat’s cool-climate terroir.

It’s an out-and-out ripper. Smoky, bunchy, well-fruited, dense, finessed, so many things. Powerful lines delivered with grace. It’s excellent throughout
but the finish has that extra something.

Sourced from four single vineyards in Geelong, two in the Moorabool Valley (Hillside Haven & Springbank) and two from the Bellarine (Hat Rock &
Suma Park). All fruit was hand-picked and fermented separately to keep the individual vineyard characters distinct. Each parcel was treated the same; wild yeast fermented with around 40% whole bunches. The wine was then matured
for 10 months in 40% new French oak barriques. After rigorous tastings we blended the wines to create this wonderful Pinot Noir in the Lethbridge style.

Fresh nectarine, ginger spice and a touch of cream wound together with zesty
acidity. This Chardonnay should develop over the next 5-10 years in the cellar, retaining acidity and the fruit flavours developing into grilled
nuts and baked nectarines.

The fruit for this wine comes from the Suma Park Vineyard on the Bellarine Peninsula yielding one tonne/acre. The hand-picked fruit was whole bunch pressed into 100% new French oak puncheons for fermentation and MLF by indigenous yeast on full solids. The wine components were then matured in 30% new French oak barrels on gross lees for a further 11 months prior to blending and bottling.

The wines of Merricks are amongst, if not the best, wines of the Mornington Peninsula. They have an arresting balance between vibrant aromatics, silky smooth palate and firm refreshing tannins. The palest of the three wines, the 2017 Merricks displays a bright crimson edge and lifted raspberry and cranberry notes. The palate has a silky feel with very fine tannins and refreshing acidity.

Bright ruby colour with the most beautiful aromatic nose of lifted juicy red and black cherry, rose petals and violets, and hints of strawberry, raspberry and mulberry. On the palate red cherry fruit is centre stage, with some more savoury thyme, rosemary and lavender herbal notes and a hint of Chinese five spice. Firm, fine grained tannins add structure to the wine, as does juicy red fruited acidity. Delicious to drink right now with a chunk of Ossau-Iraty cheese (traditionally served with a spoonful of cherry jam), and a lovely match to pan-fried duck breast with duck-fat roasted potatoes. Will age well if you have the patience!

It's slightly warmer as you come down the hill and Balnarring can produce wonderfully opulent Pinots that still manage to retain a core of refreshing acidity. The 2019 Balnarring shows pure black cherry and blackcurrant aromas. The palate shows a lovely balance between acid and tannins with a powerful yet silky mid-palate given focus by soft persistent tannins.

Palest gold in colour with a nose that is redolent of honeysuckle, ripe white nectarines, lemon zest and a hint of grapefruit. Hints of toasted brioche, shortcrust pastry and clotted cream add richness and sandalwood spice and salty notes bring savoury complexity as the wine opens up in the glass. On the palate the wine is zesty with juicy lemon and grapefruit flavours and acidity, salted green pineapple notes and peach skin phenolics. The finish is long, firm and refreshing. Delicious right now, this will be a perfect match to kingfish ceviche or sashimi, or flathead tails panfried in butter.
