The apple, pear and grapefruit of Mornington Peninsula chardonnay is brushed with the biscuity complexity of old French oak fermentation followed by 4 years on lees in bottle. Notes of struck flint reduction accent a tense style, charged with the taut acidity of the cool 2011 season.

"Aromatically, this begins with a tightly held set of notes that sit in a pithy lemon and herb spectrum. With swirling, this fans out to take in broader, more cushioned hints of vanilla and spice, but the aroma profile never sheds its delightfully nervy tension, so the whole bounces between tautness and richness. Don’t rush this wine, as extended nosing rewards with a constantly changing balance and set of components. It’s one to savour. In the mouth, this shows a subtlety and elegance that, as with the nose, shouldn’t be rushed."
Julian Coldrey
Estate wines are those which express regional origin with barrel selections from individual vineyards merging their specific attributes into a coalescence which harmoniously blends into a whole. These wines represent what we believe to be the best expression of a Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir or Chardonnay each vintage. The aim is not to seek the individuality of the single vineyards, rather we liken our Estate Wines to a “field blend”, albeit one created at the tasting bench in the barrel room but nonetheless a blend of clones from a wide variety of individual vineyard blocks. Clone P58 (100) from our Wallis (45%), McCutcheon (35%) and Judd (20%) vineyards. Grapes hand-harvested through mid to late March, whole bunch pressed and the unsettled juice was transferred to 21% new French oak barriques. Fermentation by indigenous yeasts preceded a complete malolactic fermentation in spring and regular stirring of lees was carried out over a 10 month barrel maturation. Bottled unfined after filtration.

As with the other 2017 Ten Minutes by Tractor Chardonnay releases, this is the most refined McCutcheon in living memory, even despite the vineyard tendency for more robust wines. Marzipan and matchstick funk over a palate that is so concentrated and offsets the subtle citrussy acid perfectly. The achingly low yields have delivered so little of this wine, and it’s a shame – it’s probably the most satisfying of all the single vineyard Chardonnay releases to drink now.

Following an average rainfall and relatively warm winter, it was again the spring weather leading up to flowering which caused issues. October was our third wettest on record (96mm v 62mm average) and November saw our second coldest maximum and minimum temperatures (19.3° v 20.9°, 9.6° v 10.9°), consequently the budburst interval (budburst-flowering) was our longest ever – 87 days v an average of 75 days – and flowering was our latest ever (5 December v our 21 November average). In the end, due to the excellent February and March, hang time (budburst- harvest) was average – 205 days v an average of 204 days – and harvest date was close to average – 1 April v an average of 29 March. Yields are down because of the problems around flowering but summer and early autumn saw long, slow ripening – perfect for our Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Grapes hand-harvested in late March, whole bunch pressed and the unsettled juice fermented by indigenous yeasts in 15% new 228 litre French oak barrels. A 10 month aging in barrel with no bâtonnage to keep wines fresher and more taut. Natural partial (74%) malolactic fermentation before bottling unfined and filtered.

Notes of peach and honeydew form a freshness on the nose leading into a soft and luscious mid palate with mealy undertones yet a clean citrus zing on the finish.

The Wallis vineyard typically affords the most delicate expression of Chardonnay in the Ten Minutes by Tractor portfolio, so in a cool year like 2011, the question becomes: how far will growing conditions push the site’s natural style? The answer is: excitingly far. The 2011 Wallis retains all the finesse for which this label is known, but the vintage’s extraordinary nature has produced an almost archetypal wine. The aroma presents a collection of notes primarily in the upper registers. Foremost amongst them is a sense of minerality, part powder and part perfume, that recalls fine fragrance. This is a first spray of your favourite summer eau de toilette, invigorating and complex, so precisely layered it seems designed that way. Alongside, there’s the smell of white flowers, delicate spice and, finally, hits of the citrus fruit that finds its full expression on the palate.

After a decade of warm and dry conditions the 2011 vintage broke the drought with over 600 mm of rain during the growing season versus an average of 350mm, the cool and wet conditions resulted in our latest harvest on record (16 April v 2 April average). Yields were reduced but those grapes that were picked were of good quality – great natural acidity and lovely flavours in our Chardonnay with the Pinot Noir benefitting from the long cool ripening (second longest veraison interval, 68 days v 57 day average).
The grapes were hand-harvested through the third week of April, whole bunch pressed and the unsettled juice was transferred to 25% new French oak barriques. Fermentation by indigenous yeasts preceded a partial (45%) malolactic fermentation in spring and regular stirring of lees was carried out over a 9 month barrel maturation. Bottled unfined after filtration.

The Wallis vineyard produces a very particular expression of Chardonnay that, each year, stands out in the Ten Minutes by Tractor range. It has a high toned finesse that is immediately recognisable when placed alongside the muscular McCutcheon wine, and this architectural filigree is one of the wine’s principal pleasures. The nose here, for example, is immediately expressive of minerals as much as herbs and citrus - it has a curiously piercing note of struck flint that provides a beautiful edge to the wine’s aroma. Smelling this is like exploring a rock- strewn road on a bright winter’s day - lines are etched and sensations sharpened, the whole bright and cool at the same time. There are deeper wells of aroma here, but these remain firmly recessed.
