Moorooduc Estate
Mornington Peninsula (Vic)
The Story
Established in 1982 by Richard and Jill McIntyre, Moorooduc Estate is a small, family run wine business that has developed an enviable reputation for complex and food friendly wines.
After sourcing and obtaining vine cuttings and tending them through their first years, the McIntyres produced the first commercial release of Moorooduc Estate Cabernet and Chardonnay in 1986. In the thirty-three years since those first plantings, the vineyards at Moorooduc Estate have changed and developed. The property is planted to capacity – 12 acres of vineyard in all. Cabernet is no longer produced, as it was discovered that this site’s true talent is for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
The Approach
The McIntyres' philosophy in everything they do is to make the most of top quality ingredients. Intensive, hands-on care in the vineyard, with minimal use of chemicals, produces the best possible fruit for their wines. Wild yeast ferments and minimal intervention winemaking, with a nod to traditional Burgundian techniques, allow their wines to express their site specificity, or terroir.
All fruit is hand harvested and this usually occurs during March. In the winery, the emphasis is on gentle handling of the fruit and natural winemaking methods with some quality control.
