The Smokestack Lightning wines from Dave Macintosh are interesting takes on white varieties made with some portion of skin contact and as little intervention as possible.

They are pure expressions of vineyards with amazing vitality. A cleaner, more grown-up version of the amber wine scene, you might say.

The SCPG (Skin Contact Pinot Gris) shows almost more in common with a Rosé than a white. The natural blushed pink tones of the Pinot Gris skin really getting a chance to shine in this release.

This version spent 11 days on skins then hung out in a barrel for a while to really hit its straps.

It's a voluptuous version of the variety which doesn't compromise on freshness. It's excellent drinking all round.

Cobaw Ridge has a long history with Chardonnay. They have been making some of the region's best examples for decades.

Here's a new iteration of the grape. This is one of the more ambitious amber wines ever attempted in Australia and it's a wildly successful one at that.

The wine was made in two components. The first was fermented on skins for three weeks and left to age in barrel for two years, the second component was on skins for an incredible 737 days before pressing.

The wine that has finally emerged is one of immense power and detail. It's the first release and it jumps straight to the front of the line for best examples of orange wine in the country. It's a brilliant, complex Chardonnay in a unique lane.

Vermentino that sees texture and complexity as calling cards, and not an attempt at Another Dry White Wine. Brilliant release. Reinventing Clare Valley one wine at a time. Younger generation brother duo doing so good. What a wine! Succulent, fine boned, lightly juicy, green apple and quince flavours, scents of potpourri, ripe apple and ginger. Flavours are drawn ultra long on that gloss of texture then finish with a powdery puff of talc and light pleasing bitterness. It's a wine of finesse but also a wild streak. It's awesome.

Hand harvested and sorted in vineyard. Destemmed retaining ~ 50% whole berries. No whole bunch. Natural ferment in open top steel fermenters, hand plunged twice daily. 3 weeks on skins. Free run and pressings combined. Settled off gross lees for 7 days. Matured in stainless steel tank for 7 months.

The Ravensworth Seven Months is one of Bryan Martin's favourite wines to make. Excitingly, this year, the 2019 release is all estate grown fruit from Bryan's own vineyard in Murrumbateman.

The classic three variety blend of Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewurztraminer fermented on skins in ceramic egg for seven months (hence the name), with this extended skin contact adding all sorts of colour, texture and complexity.

This year's might be the best to date, a glorious mouthful of fruit that's slippery, grippy, textural and thought-provoking.
