The Avani Issan Vineyard Chardonnay 2021 from Gippsland’s Outtrim region offers a savoury, powerful profile with aromas of meal, nuts, orchard fruits, and citrus, accented by a hint of salinity. Crafted with minimal intervention—whole-bunch pressing, wild yeast fermentation in seasoned French oak, and no fining or filtration—it reflects the site’s unique character. The Issan Vineyard, a high-density planting of 9,000 vines per hectare, employs biodynamic practices, including seaweed sprays, cover crops, and garlic-chilli pest deterrents to enhance soil vitality. Established in 1994 by Phillip Jones and Eddy Tee, the vineyard has been managed by the Tee family since 1998. Shashi Singh, who began at Bass Phillip in 2004, and her son Rohit, bring their expertise to Avani, crafting wines that honour Gippsland’s terroir with precision and care.

"This is a cool and restrained pinot noir, lithe and shapely, fine boned, a web of lacy, silty tannin lends structure and the wine sits comfortable in its dark cherry, black olive, faintly game meat-meets-rosemary savouriness with a little sweet. smoky earth character in the mix for good measure. Understated and elegant but with plenty going on. A little spread in texture gives the wine a moreish feel. It feels fancy too, in that distinct way that great wines of the world hold themselves. The fruit comes from Mount Gambier and Heywood in South West Victoria. This is Xavier’s original flagship wine. Made to make people happy. As Xavier says, it's everything that a Pinot Noir should be! The grapes are 100% destemmed and fermented in stainless steel for 2-3 weeks. Pressed and aged in a mixture of stainless and old barrels then filtered and bottled in August. Simple.

This Pinot has a translucent bright ruby colour, it’s dazzling. It starts with a bouquet of flowers, cherry blossoms, rose petals and hibiscus. There are umami notes of fresh hazelnuts in skins, game meat and wet forest floor. Flavours are full of cranberry juice and tart cherries with a hint of sweet kirsch character. It has a light touch, savoury finish and lifted acidity. Very moreish, so easy to drink.
